Cultivating Curiosity: How School Gardens Grow Healthy Minds and Habits
Thursday February 19, 2026 9:00am - 10:00am MST
School gardens are more than outdoor classrooms—they are dynamic, hands-on learning spaces where children cultivate essential life skills, connect with the environment, and develop a lifelong love of nature. This presentation will explore how garden-based agriculture and nutrition education can transform the way students engage with food, learning, and their environment.
Participants will learn how the simple act of planting a seed can blossom into powerful educational outcomes: increased science achievement, stronger social-emotional skills, and greater awareness of nutrition and sustainable food practices. From prepping soil and growing food in small spaces to aligning gardening activities with curriculum goals, we’ll share practical steps to help your school garden thrive throughout the seasons.
Drawing from real experiences across Alberta—where school gardens have taken root in both rural and urban settings—we’ll showcase how this movement has grown from a grassroots idea into an inspiring province-wide initiative. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to expand your garden program, this session will provide the knowledge, confidence, and tools to support your journey.

Building Safe Spaces: The 4 & 7 of Being Trauma Aware
Thursday February 19, 2026 9:00am - 10:00am MST
In recent years, the importance of becoming trauma aware has gained recognition across various sectors, including education, healthcare, and social services. This presentation explores the foundational framework of trauma-informed environments, highlighting the four pillars—realize, recognize, respond and resisting re-traumatization—and the seven guiding principles that underpin effective trauma-informed practices. The Child Advocacy Centre Education team will discuss how these elements work synergistically to create spaces that not only recognize the prevalence of trauma but actively promote healing and resilience. Participants will gain insights into implementing these principles in their own organizations, while moving from being reactive to a proactive setting while fostering environments that prioritize emotional and psychological safety. The Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre Education Team will guide you through the 4 & 7 and help your organization work towards creating a plan that fosters becoming trauma aware.

Financial Wellness Start With You - And It Starts Now
Thursday February 19, 2026 9:00am - 10:00am MST
Let’s face it — life doesn’t wait. Emergencies happen. We just saw that  in the Fall. And when they do, your financial readiness can mean the difference between calm and chaos. This isn’t just about money — it’s about mental health, peace of mind, and being able to show up for your students, your family, and yourself without the weight of financial stress dragging you down. Here’s the truth: According to the 2025 Financial Stress Index by FP Canada, 42% of Canadians identify money as their top source of stress, marking an increase from 38% in 2021. For teachers, that pressure doesn’t stay at home — it walks into the classroom with you. Over three-quarters of respondents in this study worry frequently, and nearly half admit it affects their job performance. That’s not just statistics — that’s real life. But it doesn't have to be yours. As educators, you give so much. It’s time to give something back to yourself: financial security. This session is your wake-up call — and your solution. We’ll show you how to: • Uncover hidden financial gaps that could leave you exposed. • Build a safety net to handle life’s curveballs — from car repairs to major financial emergencies. • Plan confidently for big milestones like your child’s education, retirement, or a future home. Most importantly, we’ll show you the smartest, most tax-efficient way to build your emergency fund — inside a TFSA. It’s flexible, it grows tax-free, and it’s your first line of defense when the unexpected happens. With our expert guidance, local insight, and personalized approach, we’ll help you take control — not just survive, but thrive. This is more than financial advice. This is a strategy for your well-being. Let us help you build a plan that brings clarity, confidence, and control back into your life. Get started with a TFSA emergency fund — because the best time to prepare was yesterday. The second-best time is now.

Why Alberta Has Catholic Separate Schools
Thursday February 19, 2026 9:00am - 10:00am MST
The Canadian and Albertan constitutions guarantee that Catholics (and Protestants) have the right to fully publicly funded schools under certain circumstances. Some confusion and misunderstanding exists over why this right exists and what exactly it means. Yet Prime Minister Tupper actually said that, without this right to separate schools, Canada would never have become a country. This presentation will go over WHY Alberta has publicly funded Catholic schools--the history of how this right ended up in our constitution, what the courts have said it means, what it tells us about Canadian identity, why some people take issue with it, and why it still matters and what we can learn from it today.

Using Visual Journals in a Primary Classroom
Thursday February 19, 2026 10:20am - 11:20am MST
Our classrooms are dynamic learning spaces where students learn through hands-on experiences, mentor texts, and discussions. Once knowledge is constructed, our students illustrate, label, create timelines, and write in their visual journals. We provide frameworks and our students represent their learning. This process fosters deep understanding and gives our students agency in their learning. It is completely different than highlighting passages on a worksheet, fill-in the blanks, and word searches often found in a traditional worksheet unit. Learn how you can use this tool to meet the needs of diverse learners from high ability students to students needing accommodations. Join us on this journey! Thursday February 19, 2026 10:20am - 11:20am MST
Which generative AI model (ChatGPT, Grok, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini) is the best for what you do? This session compares the effectiveness of models in different tasks (math, graphs, text, academic work, etc.) and introduces attendees to models for image creation, summarizing information, writing emails, and coding. Want to get better output from your AI? This session explores prompt engineering. What makes a good prompt? Warning, if your students know this, it is much harder to detect their cheating. Companies are tuning AI models and offering amended versions as a service. What is retrieval augmented generative AI and how does it work? What do you look for if you are using one of these services? The session will conclude with examples of AI projects by Red Deer Polytechnic Bachelor of Business Administration Degree students and Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics Diploma and Post-Baccalaureate Certificate students.

Level Up Your Classroom: A Beginner's Guide to Gamification
Thursday February 19, 2026 11:40am - 12:40pm MST
Why can a student who gives up on a worksheet spend hours trying to defeat a single video game boss? The answer is a masterclass in human psychology: constant feedback, clear goals, and an undeniable sense of progression. Games are engineered for engagement. What if our classrooms could be, too? This session is your guide to cracking the code. We will demystify the core principles that make games so compelling and provide a clear roadmap for applying them to any subject or grade level. Forget the tired model of subtraction—where students lose points from a perfect score. Instead, learn to build a system of progression, where every student starts a unique journey and is empowered to grow. Through a real-life case study of a gamified Grade 8 classroom, you will see how these concepts come to life. This isn't about intimidating tech; it's about innovative teaching. You will walk out inspired and equipped to make immediate changes that will have your students begging to be in your class.

Indigenous Pedagogies: An Act for Reconciliation and Anti-Racist Education, Rebecca will share the work she has done at a classroom and school level, such as monthly Orange Shirt Days, monthly Land Based education walks to the forest, school wide bulletin boards and books by Indigenous authors. Nonetheless, limited support is often provided on how to engage in effective mentorship. This presentation will provide a summary of key findings from the mentorship literature and introduce a reflective tool to support educators in mentoring novice teachers. AI in Education: What's Working, What's Not, and What's Next
Maybe you're already experimenting with AI tools and wondering if you're doing it right. Maybe you aren't sure we should be using them at all. But almost everyone wants to know what other schools and districts are actually doing, what your students are already up to, and where all this is heading.
After hundreds of hours as an AI Ethics researcher and working with thousands of educators this year from New York to California, here's what I can tell you: there's no "right" place to be in your AI journey, but there IS a right way to approach it. And that approach includes understanding the landscape.
This keynote gives you the real picture - what's working, what's not, and what we're seeing across the education landscape right now. We'll talk tools, cut through the noise on AI detection, and look at what the research is telling us about where to actually spend your time (and not).
You'll leave with clarity on next steps - whether that's your classroom practice, your building's approach, or your division's path toward smart AI guidelines. Whether you're a skeptic, a believer, or somewhere in the middle, you'll walk away with both practical direction and a renewed sense of possibility, with the full picture in view.

Mastering Feedback: from Miscommunication to Closed-Loop Information
Thursday February 19, 2026 1:00pm - 2:00pm MST
When we think of “feedback,” it’s often tied to grades, reviews, or criticism at the end of a process. But what if feedback became a living stream of information for guiding growth, improving communication, and strengthening trust along the way? In this session, Karli Grove redefines feedback as a tool for simply collecting information throughout the process instead of just at the end. Through relatable examples and take-home questions to build from, you’ll explore six key elements of feedback: direction, timing, voice, interpretation, repercussions, and feedback (of feedback). You’ll uncover where your current approach may create gaps and will learn practical strategies to transform feedback into clear, constructive conversations.
Expect a thought provoking and hands-on experience that shifts frustrating miscommunication into tools for navigating feedback as information that deepens communication with students, colleagues, and school leadership.

Propaganda: Using Canadian War Posters to Develop Critical Thinking & Digital Literacy
Thursday February 19, 2026 1:00pm - 2:00pm MST
Propaganda! If there is one thing that most adults would agree on here in early 2026, it’s this: Never before in world history has propaganda been more ubiquitous and well-designed . . . in fact, digital tools are now so advanced that many thoughtful people are beginning to wonder how much they really ‘know’ and how much of the past they accurately understood. And if that’s the case for adults, how can we expect students to be competent at thinking critically about what they observe, hear, or read?
During this session, attendees will observe how Canadian war posters (and cartoons) from the First and Second World Wars can be used in their classroom to educate about propaganda, engage critical thinking, and further develop digital literacy skills.
During the second hour of the session, attendees will have an opportunity to connect/brainstorm with alike-subject-area teachers with a goal of creating a propaganda activity for their classroom(s).

Demystifying the Psychoeducation Assessment: Making Assessments Work for Students and Schools
Thursday February 19, 2026 2:20pm - 3:20pm MST
This session offers a practical look at the psychoeducational assessment process—what it is, what it isn’t, and how teachers and school teams can play an active role before, during, and after the assessment. We’ll explore how to gather meaningful classroom data, complete screening tools effectively, and share observations that strengthen the formal assessment. Educators will also learn how to interpret and implement assessment recommendations in realistic and supportive ways within the school setting. Designed for teachers, counsellors, LATs, and administrators, this session helps demystify the process so that psychoeducational assessments become collaborative tools for understanding and supporting every learner.

Participants will explore Bandura’s four sources of efficacy—mastery, modeling, encouragement, and emotional regulation—and learn how to embed them through growth-mindset language, goal setting, and reflective practice. Practical tools like feedback templates, goal trackers, and “power of yet” routines make progress visible and meaningful. You’ll leave with a clear framework and ready-to-use resources to cultivate students’ persistence, independence, and optimism—skills essential for lifelong learning and well-being.

Effective & Inspiring Learning Activities in the Military History Classroom
Thursday February 19, 2026 2:20pm - 3:20pm MST
War is a complex and emotionally difficult subject to cover deeply and effectively in class, but it can be done in a caring, engaging, and inspiring manner that promotes enduring lessons learned.
During this Canadian military history education session, attendees will observe different strategies and tactics teachers can employ in their classroom to increase student buy-in and more effectively educate about Canada's military history. Pedagogically speaking, the audience will see how hands-on, experiential learning (using scenarios presented to the students) can be used to elicit deeper critical thought from participating students. Methods for integrating discussion about positive citizenship will also be explored during this session.
At least two of the following activities will be demonstrated for the audience: The Four Forces of Flight (Gr.1-3), The Sinking of Llandovery Castle (WW1; Gr.4-12), The Battle of Vimy Ridge (WW1; Gr. 4-12), D-Day: Operation Neptune (WW2; Gr. 8-12), and Artifact Handling (K-12). All resources referenced during this presentation are freely available online.

Thursday February 19, 2026 2:20pm - 3:20pm MST
Meaningful movement is offered as part of a renewed vision for physical education - one that is focused on prioritizing the quality and personal significance of the learner's experience and grounded in their local contexts. But how can teachers facilitate meaningful experiences for students with intention and regularity? Meaningful PE uses democratic and reflective principles to inform how teachers can use the idea of meaningful movement as their main filter for pedagogical decision-making. This session is designed for K-12 teachers who are interested in learning about implementing the Meaningful PE approach. Authentic and rich examples from teachers will be used to illustrate and demonstrate strong use of Meaningful PE.

If I Can...
The limitations we face in life are often the ones we place on ourselves. Chris Koch’s inspirational “If I Can” presentation is about making the most out of life, with a focus on appreciating what we have instead of worrying about what we don’t.Despite being born without arms and legs, Koch didn’t let limitations and obstacles stand in the way of achieving his goals and dreams. He still grew up working on his family farm, and has spent his adult life snowboarding, running marathons, and travelling independently. If a guy without arms and legs can do all this, he says, we are all capable of some pretty amazing things. Sharing experiences and funny anecdotes from his life, Koch leaves his audiences motivated and empowered to build the life they dream of.
